"I'm under a spell-Robbery suspect tells his story
Gone are those days when robbers blame their act on the devil. These days, they blame it on spells,or witches from the village..Ugochukwu Felix, 28, a self-confessed member of a five-man robbery gang that has been terrorizing Ajegunle, Apapa and its environs.
Ugochukwu was arrested in Tolu area in Ajegunle after members of his gang allegedly snatched a Toyota Honda car owned by a resident (names withheld) in the area. Unfortunately for the suspected members of the gang, they were involved in an accident after snatching the vehicle. . While other members of the gang managed to escape, Ugochukwu was not that lucky as he was apprehended by an angry mob
In this interview with Crime Guard, the suspect claimed he was under a spell ,
“The previous day before I was arrested, I went to see my girl friend at Ajegunle. From there, I went to a night club at Apapa area to spend the night. While clubbing, I met four old friends I knew in Ajegunle and Apapa areas. I told them that in the morning I would go with them to Mile 2 since they came in a commercial bus. They agreed and early in the morning, I joined in their vehicle without knowing that they were going for a robbery operation.
While we were passing through Tolu in Ajegunle, the driver of the commercial bus stopped immediately we saw a resident about to drive his car out of his compound. Two of the gang members alighted from the bus with their guns and attacked the man, snatched his car and drove off. As soon as I saw what was happening, I became uncomfortable and alighted from the bus because it has been long I participated in robbery operation. Unfortunately, the stolen car had not moved up to ten poles when one of the tires deflated and we all came out and fled in different directions.
It was while I was attempting to escape that a resident who saw me alighting from the commercial bus raised alarm that I was part of the robbers that attacked the victim. Immediately he raised the alarm, other residents joined in the chase and I was caught and dragged to the scene of the robbery. It was then they discovered one of the locally made pistols inside the car with some cartridges.
How it all started
“I have always being a stubborn and very unruly child, just like the black sheep of the family, always causing my parents pain and agony. It was this same stubbornness that made me drop out from school, this same attitude made me quit my apprenticeship where I was learning refrigerator repairs. I was indeed, a source of pain to my mother. My parents have done all within their capacity to ensure that I live a responsible life. But I don’t know why I live a very irresponsible life. I am hard working and can do any work but I don’t know what is wrong with me. It is like I am under some sort of spell or under a curse, which is why I keep committing different crimes and disgracing my family. Before now I struggled for existence at Alaba international market and Ladipo market. Trader’s give me commission for directing customers to their shops, that is what I was doing before this unruly behavior started manifesting.
Started from pick pocket
“I started with pick-pocketing and snatching of bags at bus stops several years ago, about ten years now. Unfortunately whenever I stole I got caught. I have lost count of the number of times I have been arrested by the police, but this is the first time they transferred me to SARS. All my life, I never knew that a section like SARS existed in the police. Each time I get arrested by the police, after about two or three weeks, I get released because nobody would come to bail me. The friends that introduced me to pocket picking and bag snatching abandoned me for fear of been arrested when I was always getting caught at each operation, as they felt I had bad luck. The proceeds I made from pick-pocket were what I use to sustain myself.
Later, I joined a robbery gang that specialized in ‘one chance’ known also as ‘ push me down.’ I was a member and participated in several operations but made very little from the operations. After the operation, the leader of the gang would share the phones stolen and I normally sold mine.
How I escaped on different occasions
“If not for God, I would have died a long time ago. There was a particular operation I went for which made me know that God loves me. We were three that went for the operation. After carrying it out successfully, the other two were knocked down by a moving vehicle and both of them died instantly. When I was still doing pick-pocket, a colleague of mine was lynched to death while I narrowly escaped. When I joined ‘one chance’, police officers engaged us in a gun battle and killed three of my gang members but I still escaped.
Locating other members of the gang
“I don’t know the actual place where other members of the gang reside because as criminals, we don’t disclose where we live for security reasons. I see them in the neighborhood each time I go out. A criminal can never tell you where he lives. They don’t know where I live too. Usually, we meet in joints, clubs or parties. The only way to locate them is to go to any of those night clubs.
Plea
“I promised my God to deliver me and if God can save me from this, I will never go back into robbery again. If I get out from this place in one piece, I will go to my father and ask for forgiveness. I plead with youths to shun bad company and live responsibly,” he stated while shedding tears.

'I suffered sexual abuse in high school & physical abuse in university – Lola Omotayo
While addressing a group of young women at Kinabuti's Dare2Dream Master Class event which happened in Lagos recently, Peter Okoye's wife and mother of 2, Lola Omotayo revealed that she suffered sexual abuse by a priest when she was in secondary school and beaten black and blue by a boyfriend in the university. She said she never told anyone about the molestation because she didn't believe anyone would believe her
"I couldn’t tell anyone because everyone would blame me, so I carried on the guilt and bitterness with me for years. I was filled with hate and I became an angry person, I was rebellious, I didn’t want to listen to anybody…and because I wanted to be expelled from school to avoid seeing this person, I would do so many terrible things, everything around me was just so negative, I felt I wasn’t good enough."
‘I moved on to the university, met the love of my life and I’m like, okay this guy is cool, he loves me but he started to abuse me. I was beaten black and blue all the time, in front of friends, in public and at a point, I felt, you know what, I am not worthy enough, there is nothing about me that is nice, nobody loves me but I hid this from my family. I felt like a loser, so it was hard for me to focus. But one day, I woke up and said I am going to change my story and I dumped that person, focused on my education and decided to be serious and be something. I decided to get a job and go to school full time in America.’She said she worked hard to make her own money so she could be independent and not have to rely on any man. She said being independent and making her own money helped her build her confidence and pushed to achieve more in life. She then talked about her husband, Peter Okoye
"Look at my husband, when I met him, peeps were like what are you doing with him, he has nothing but I stood my ground and chose to stick with him because he had a dream. He and his twin brother did not let their dream die, they worked hard, look at them today! I stuck by him because he had focus and drive and today I am happy, I have a good life, we are happy and we have got a beautiful family. No one can make you a loser.’.

Meet the 10 year old boy who beat a 90 year old woman to death
How do you, at just 10 years old, beat someone until they die? At 10? That's exactly what Tristen Kurilla from Pennsylvania, (pictured above) did. He beat a 90 year old woman until she died.
He is currently being held in the adult jail as he awaits trial. He is the youngest person ever to face a murder charge in Pennsylvania.
Here's what he did. Tristen was visiting his grandfather in October this year. According to what he later told police, he entered the room of 90 year old Helen Novak who lived with his grand dad on Oct 11 to ask her a question. He said Helen screamed at him and told him to leave her room. He said he lost his temper, picked the woman's wooden cane and attacked the woman who sitting in her bed.
Police say Tristen beat her with the cane, hooked it around her neck and pushed it into her throat for a few seconds then punched her five times in the throat and several times in the stomach. There was no one else at the time of the incident to help Helen.
When the boy's granddad returned shortly and found Helen unresponsive, he called medics and the police. Tristen told police he'd only meant to hurt her, not kill her.
He is currently in adult jail though his lawyers are trying to get the courts to transfer the case to juvenile court and have Tristen moved to a youth detainment facility because of his age. That has not happened yet.
His parents are said to be devastated and claimed Tristen was such a good and kind boy who wouldn't a hurt a fly. Yeah, he skipped the fly and killed someone instead.
Tristen has since met with a psychiatrist and will next meet with the defense’s mental health expert.

100 Nigerians deported from Finland today
No fewer than 100 Nigerians were deported from Finland today Thursday December 11th after failing to get asylum. According to The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the deportees included women, children and whole families. They arrived at the Cargo Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, at 7a.m. aboard cargo airline - Privilege Gourment.
A deportee, Mr Isaac Ejiofor, told NAN that he had no criminal records in Finland and wondered why he was deported after spending over one year in the asylum camp. Ejiofor said he was earlier in Greece but later travelled to Finland to seek asylum in a bid to get a permit to work there.
A female deportee, simply called Esther, said that she and her husband had been in Finland for over 14 years and was surprised that they were deported without committing any offense. Esther said she was deported along with her husband and seven-year old daughter without any compensation. She said that other Africans in the camp were given an opportunity to stay and work in Finland, but that the Finnish authorities were hostile to Nigerians.
She appealed to the Federal Government to come to their aid, particularly Nigerians in Finland and other European countries. She said most Nigerians in asylum in Finland came from other parts of Europe like Greece, Denmark, Sweden and Norway in order to acquire work documents.
NAN reports that of the deportees, three men were arrested for violence and were taken to the MMIA Police Station. Some others were arrested on arrival by the police for travel offenses and taken by a sheriff bus to the Criminal Investigation Department, Nigerian Police Force, Alagbon Close, Ikoyi, Lagos.

"A policeman asked me what I want since I did not have any criminal record to warrant my deportation. I said I wanted to work and live a normal life in Finland, so he (policeman) told me to seek asylum and I did that. I was taken to the asylum camp and was there for more than a year processing my work documents. There were other African nationals there with four Nigerians. Suddenly, we, the Nigerians were brought out and deported without any reason.
"The Nigerian Embassy in Finland refused to come to my aid, even after I paid 1,500 euros to embassy officials’’, he alleged.Another deportee, who wanted to be identified as Jackso, alleged that officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Finland colluded with some Finnish immigration officers to extort money from asylum seekers in the camp. Jackso said that the embassy officials promised to assist them to get work permits from the Finnish authority.

(Graphic pic) : How Indian Hemp Seller butchered widow, son & daughter in Lagos
If Mrs Helen Okoro, a widow and mother of two had known that picking a quarrel with a neighbor who had stabbed her son would also land her and daughter in hospital, she probably would have just reported the case and allowed the law to do justice. She told Leadership
“We live at Adidas street, Tolu, at the shores of Tolu- Tin can lagoon. Last year, Babalawo had a problem with my son, Godwin who is just 15 -years-old. One day, Godwin was carrying sand for somebody and Babalawo saw him, picked up a bottle and attempted to break my son’s head with it but he was able to escape and ran away from him. When I heard about the incident, I confronted him but instead of making peace he threatened to kill me and my children. So since then we have avoided him. What led to the problem on November 14th was that I found a pair of slippers in the dustbin and wanted to use it to make a fire. Babalawo saw the slippers with Godwin and challenged him.
My son told him they belonged to his mother because I brought it from the dustbin. The wicked and shameless man broke a bottle and gave my son a hot pursuit. When he apprehended him, he stabbed him in the head. People were begging the man to leave the little boy alone but to no avail. When I returned home I was faced with that situation. When I inquired why he should stab my son, he threatened to kill me. He wore the necklace I gave my son, so I removed it from his neck after he struggled with me to retain it. To my greatest surprise, he picked up a bottle and after smashing it stabbed me close to my breast. I screamed that the man had killed me and as he wanted to stab me in the face, I blocked the bottle with my hand.”
“There was blood all over my body. I thought I was going to die. I could not bear the pains so I cried like a baby. I was screaming and rolling in the pool of my blood until somebody called my daughter, Blessing who rushed back home. On seeing me, she cried, thinking that the man had killed me.”
The man is a known Indian hemp seller in the area. He knew I had nobody to run to. He knew I’m from a very poor family. He believed he would kill me and members of my family and nothing will happen. From what has happened so far, if this man kills me and members of my family the police will not do anything.”
On filing a complaint
“Policemen at Tolu police station have taken sides“They were protecting the man and he kept boasting that the policemen there were on his payroll. He might be right, because the Investigative Police Officer (IPO) who is handling the case is doing the wrong thing. He refused to make an arrest and the suspect is walking free. The IPO did not include his name in the statement form.
The woman and her daughter in Femi Hospital, Bale street, Tolu Olodi- Apapa, in tears, lamenting their agony and humiliation. Their blood pressure ran high, not because of what the man did to them but from how to raise N200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Naira) bill the hospital had just presented to them
Also, instead of rushing me and my daughter to the general hospital, they abandoned us at Femi Hospital, Bale Street, Tolu, Olodi -Apapa. The medical director of the hospital (Olufemi Ekanado) told my daughter and I to pay N200, 000 before they could discharge us. My daughter’s bill is N80,000 while mine is N120, 000. I’m a widow and a petty trader. I hawk sachet water, so how can I raise such amount of money?
All the money we have at home is about N20, 000 both my money and that of my daughter. My daughter persuaded the doctor to allow her go home and bring the little cash but he refused, saying we must pay all the money. We have been held captive here since November 14, this year when the incident occurred. The man who inflicted the injury in us did not even come to say sorry. He never cared whether we survive or die. But God will pay him back.”
“I would like either the Federal government or governor Babatunde Fashola-led government to rescue us from this problem. I know Fashola is a very good and kind Governor. He should see us as members of his family and assist us.”
Her daughter, 19 year old Blessing, an SSS 2 student of Ojoku Senior High School, Tolu, Olodi- Apapa said,
“Unless there is no law in Nigeria and unless all poor Nigerians can never get justice, then this man will go scot-free.Everybody in the area knows Babalawo is a very wicked man and Indian hemp seller. Police are shielding him because he usually goes to the station to ‘settle’ them. Government should step in, arrest and prosecute this man for multiple attempted murder.”
When Leadership visited Adidas street, close to Tolu -Tincan Lagoon, people seemed to be afraid to say anything concerning Babalawo. They either responded thus:
“Please go, I don’t know who you are talking about,” or “Please, I don’t know who you are. Go and search for Babalawo yourself”.
Meanwhile, Leadership went to the station to see the divisional police officer of the station, SP Mohammed Aminu, but he was available. All efforts made to get the reaction of the State police spokesperson, DSP Ken Nwosu proved abortive as he did not respond to calls.

Democracy is not about quarreling like motor park touts – Jonathan
President Jonathan today Tuesday Dec. 9th called on politicians to shun “ceaseless quarreling” and engage in robust political debates that would strengthen the country’s democracy.
Jonathan made the call at the public presentation and official launch of the Kukah Centre, founded by prominent cleric and Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Rev. Fr. Matthew Kukah.
Among other aims, the centre was established to strengthen national debate, improve governance and encourage Nigerians to take an active role in the country’s leadership.
Jonathan said that the nation’s democracy should be deepened by robust debates, stimulation of innovative ideas and healthy engagements by all actors.
According to him, such centres have served as the laboratories of the development, inter-relation and the refinement of key government policies.
He likened the Kukah Center to the Brooklyn Institute in America, which pioneered fact-based studies of government policies, using science as a key to analysis.
The president then challenged Nigerian politicians to draw inspiration from it.

Among other aims, the centre was established to strengthen national debate, improve governance and encourage Nigerians to take an active role in the country’s leadership.
Jonathan said that the nation’s democracy should be deepened by robust debates, stimulation of innovative ideas and healthy engagements by all actors.
“I call on everyone, the political class, our citizens and more importantly, the academic community to rise up to these challenges posed by this initiative (centre).
“I think we are over defining our democracy today by quarreling as if democracy is about competitors quarreling just like motor park workers,” he said. The president urged politicians to use the 2015 elections to renew their commitment to the country’s unity. He said:
“As elections draw close, I call on all politicians to see this as another opportunity for us to renew our commitment to deepen our democracy and strengthen our bond of unity.
“Democracy is not about political parties and politicians alone, it is not just about winning or losing elections; it is about freedom, about development and above all a forward march of our civilisation and encouragement of creativity.
“It is in this regard that we must seek to identify and support the growth of structures and institutions that will help strengthen our democracy to meet our aspirations as a people.”Jonathan noted that policy research institutes like the Kukah Centre had been pivotal to the social economic transformation of leading countries of the world.
"I’m personally convinced that the centre could not have finer mentor than the revered gentleman of long patriotic standing, Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah,” he added. The centre also aims at promoting conversations among Nigeria’s faith communities, as well as between leaders in faith and public policy.

Jim Nwobodo disowns his three children from his first wife
Jim Nwobodo has disowned his 3 children from his first wife, saying they're not his 'flesh & blood'
The former Governor of the old Anambra State addressed journalists today in Enugu and accused two of his children (the ones he disowned today) Chukwudi and Nonso Nwobodo, of stealing the corpse of their older brother, Ifeanyi Nwobodo, who died in November after a battle with cancer
Remember last week Jim Nwobodo refused for his 1st son to be buried inside his compound, insisting that he be buried outside. But his brothers refused and took his corpse away. Nwobodo addressed the problems he's having with his sons at his home today. Continue to read what he told journalists...
"This is not really a very happy occasion for me – at my age, I should be talking about peace and not to get involved in something like this. Ifeanyi was my first son and unknown to us, myself and my wife, his family hid him.
“When we got to know that he was sick, we were very worried, we made sure he was taken to the best cancer hospital in the US.”
"From the day he died, I started planning for his burial. Because of politics, I felt that I should bury him before the primaries.
“Chukwudi and Nonso (Ifeanyi’s siblings) came to see me here and I told them that the burial will be in two weeks time, that they should come back so that we could plan for it.
“As I am talking, I have seen neither Chukwudi nor Nonso till date. Their sister, who came back from US and called me to say that she is back, as I am talking to you, I have not seen her.
“You start to wonder- what kind of children are these? The press said I have two wives – it is not true. I divorced her (former wife) before I became governor. I have the divorce papers, please don’t refer to me as having two wives. I am a decent man. I have only one wife. Please save me the trouble and embarrassment of talking about matrimonial trouble, the church will not wed me if I have two wives.
"The children through her (former wife) cannot be said to have been flesh and blood. I am stopping at that – you know what I mean. A child that is yours will not hurt you like this, these children cannot be my flesh and blood.
“My children love me. It is only children that are not yours that will seize their brother’s dead body. If they can steal the dead body of their brother, it is terrible, unprecedented.”
“They suggested the church and when the Bishop approached me, I accepted. The Bishops started preparing for the service, but till date the same people disappeared. If they say a word, I will tell the world what they have done and the entire world will spit at them”.
"If you are a father, you put the date for your son’s burial and these riff-raffs put a new date, will you go?”Source: Punch
